Azaleas Mean Spring Color
It's May and springtime in Atlanta! What harkens spring more than the sight of azaleas in full bloom? Whether you're trekking around Augusta National or driving through Alpharetta neighborhoods, explosions of pink, purple, red, white and every imaginable combination announce the presence of azaleas.
Members of the rhododendron family, there are over 10,000 named varieties of azalea. Most traditional azalea varieties bloom for about two weeks during April or May. In warm climates such as the deep south, some azalea varieties bloom again in the fall. This re-blooming trait is being bred into the EncoreT azaleas which bloom for three seasons -- spring, summer and fall.
North American species of azalea are deciduous, meaning they drop at least some of their leaves in the fall. The leaves that are left will turn colors, including shades of bronze, purple or yellow.
Most azaleas tolerate partial to almost full shade. Some varieties do well with more sun. While more sun typically produces more compact plants with more blooms, the blooms will not last as long.
Like other spring-flowering shrubs, azaleas should not be pruned early as this could destroy the flowering buds. Prune in summer soon after the flowers have died. Younger plants will tolerate a good bit of pruning -- as much as half. If older azaleas become overgrown, they are better replaced than pruned back.
If you want spring color in your spring landscape, there is no better choice for our area than azaleas. With the availability of the EncoreT varieties, that color can be stretched far beyond the traditionally short blooming season.
